Make Your Own: Non-stick Spray

I am not sure if I should have titled this a “kitchen help” or a “make your own”. Hmm…..

My grandmother P1060922used to use butter to grease her pans. But then butter was found to be “unhealthy” and margarine was en vogue. But it was awful for greasing a pan! It left residue that wouldn’t come off with months of scrubbing. Not to mention spreading something over a pan was WAY too time consuming. Enter the invention of the non-stick spray. Which is just oh-so-healthy for you (not). And SUPER cheap (um, not!). Geesh….

So while I personally would go back to real food and grease my pan with organic butter like the originals, someone smarter than me found a better, healthier way ;-) . The Misto.

This is just about my favorite tool in the kitchen. I fill it up with extra virgin olive oil and let it work its magic. Clearly, as the first paragraph shows, it makes for an excellent non-stick sprayer. It coats evenly and quickly. I also (because there is a true food product inside) use it to spray oil on bread for garlic bread, the top of casseroles made with breadcrumbs for browning, use flavored oil and spray air popped popcorn, and I even spray the skillet when I want to pan fry something without using too much oil. You could get very creative if you wanted to put something other than plain oil in it. If you have any ideas (that won’t clog it!) please leave them in the comment feed!

The Misto is a WONDERFUL gadget and a must have in this kitchen. Do you have a new idea for your Christmas list yet?? I’ve seen them at T. J. Maxx, Amazon.com and many retail stores- As low as $9. Of course, you can always find something like this at a garage sale as well.

Here’s to living- Happier, Healthier, more FRUGAL lives!

My father in law loves his olive oil sprayer. I’m not sure what brand he has, but he raves about it. I’m hoping to get one for Christmas :0)

I love my Misto! It is handy for in the shop, too–my son uses one with isopropol alcohol in it clean things. It makes a fine mist–no waste!
